Marco

How we met

5 December 2007

Sint Nicolas was supposed to arrive at a quarter past two at SHC, the 5th of December. So about half past twelve I drove my car to the ready products warehouse where there was space for everyone to gather, because I was to supply a microphone and speakers with my dance equipment. I needed a table and a socket or an extension lead, and to find out where I could build up everything I went into our department head’s office. Two employees and the boss were busy talking and joking, and a young driver was standing by the fax machine. So that didn't help much so finally I gave up and went to organise things myself with the organiser and Technical Services. I started setting up and testing the equipment and the other employees started to load the truck. When I was almost ready, the truck was also loaded and the driver came up to me. He said: "if Sint Niclas has a present for the nice driver from Pluim, that's me".

We were all given a gingerbread man. So I thought of the driver and indeed decided to organise a present for him. I called the warehouse to ask for the driver’s name and how regularly he came to us. His name was Marco and he came almost every day to pick up boxes from our plant. I asked the organiser if there were still some gingerbread men left over, but she didn't know yet. So I packed my own in paper and stuck a label on it: "For Marco, the nice driver from Pluim. From Sint”, and I put it in my desk drawer. I mailed the warehouse that I wanted to be called when Marco appeared again, and that was no problem.

The following day

The following day I could do nothing but look out of the window. And around lunchtime, sure enough, the truck from Pluim came along and took the turn around our building. My heart jumped and my nerves began to tremble and then: telephone! "Marco is here" "OK thanks "... but I thought "Oh my...." I took the present out my drawer and put on my coat, and walked to the warehouse. I came across him and gave him the gingerbread man and he read the label. He liked it very much! And said he would think of me at Christmas in return. As he walked away he turned around and called "What’s your name?" "Mayke", I said. "OK, I’ll think of you at Christmas". So that was that. It was a very short second meeting. No time for a chat as I really wanted to find out if he lived in Apeldoorn and whether he was single or living with someone! But if I wanted to see him again I could ask the boss to tell me if he was here again, then I could join them for a cup of coffee.

I had a few days off then and when I returned he called me at work. "Am I addressing the nice lady from SHC?" "Am I talking to the nice driver from Pluim?", so began the conversation. He had called to say that he found the present very nice and that he had eaten it on the way and it was very tasty. The following day he called me again! He just wished me a good weekend! I told him that it was my birthday that weekend and that I was going to celebrate it in Up & Down. And I said that I now had his number, I wrote it down from the display. After we had hung up I sent an SMS: Why do you think of me so often? It's nice! Good weekend, Mayke. Now it was even and he also had my number. Naturally I received a reply a short time later, and that was: "Because your friendly personality and beautiful appearance made an impression on me immediately, that’s why. Happy birthday again, and have a good weekend! gr marco". My weekend could not go wrong any more!

SMS and birthday

During that weekend some SMS messages went to and fro. On Sunday afternoon he asked if I maybe had some time in the evening to see him, then he could come by to give me a birthday cuddle. Unfortunately I didn't but I we agreed that I would call him at ten o’clock. So I did and we chatted for a while. He would SMS me if he came to SHC again, and because I had to admit that in the meantime I didn’t remember what he looked like any more, I really wanted to see him again.

Monday 17 December, to Pluim

On Mondays I work half a day, so the chance of seeing him was somewhat smaller. And he didn’t have to go to SHC, so he asked me in an SMS if I wanted to have a coffee with him at Pluim when he had finished his driving. That was great with me! In the end it became seven o’clock and he only had one hour to spare, but I that was fine. I cycled to Pluim and we chatted for a while. He is 33 years old and lives in De Maten. He studied car mechanics and then car repair, but through a courier service he came to truck driving. He is going to renovate a Fiat 500 that he just bought. When saying goodbye I got the promised birthday cuddle and a kiss! The next day he came to SHC, and all the days following! So each time he was there I went to the warehouse for a short chat, even at seven o’clock in the morning. And each time he passes he blows the horn and we wave at each other.

And I think he is just great! Sweet and sturdy and spontaneous, and handy! So I can say nothing else but:

2008 will be a good year!!
