NSU Sport-PrinzNSU Type: Typ 41Years: 1959 - 1967 Production Number: 20,831 Weight: 555Kg General Info: Two cylinder, four stroke, rear engine. 583cc to 1961 then 598cc. Sportcar styling, which was the basis for the Wankel Spider. The SportPrinz was used for a prototype. This car was created to add a sporty model to the very straight line of models that NSU had around 1957. The sales figures of the Goggomobil Coupé showed that the public had a real interrest in this type of car Around 1958, Nuccio Bertone showed the first drawings of this car. On March 2nd. 1959 the production of this model began in the factory of Bertone in Turino. The first car had chassis number 410 1001. The first 250 cars were completely build in Italy, later only the bodies, which were shipped to and completed in NSU's own facilities in Neckarsulm. In september 1959, an updated version of the car, the "Sport-Prinz II" was introduced: the original car had some small issues which were fixed, and some changes were made to the engine. In October 1960, the car was equiped with the engine from the [then] new Prinz III. As the Prinz 4 was introduced in September 1961, further changes were done to the sleek car, which became know internally as "Sport-Prinz III". The first NSU Sportprinz with the body produced by the body maker Drauz from Heilbronn was manufactured on November 9, 1960, and had chassis number 410 3001. That is why not 2715 Sportprinz units was equipped with an imported Bertone chassis but about 2000 units. With the production lines for the older Prinz I being available, production was completely moved to Neckarsulm in Juni 1962, but these production lines were later needed for the Prinz 4. The production of the NSU Sportprinz ceased on June 26, 1967, after the introduction of the Ro 80, for which much production capacity was needed. The last Sportprinz had the chassis number 412 2117, engine number 4731 8972, was a right-hand driver for a British customer and painted in red colour. Links:
